    "Let us not forget"

    August 2008 . . . . . . . . .

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Welcome to the Erie County (PA) Genealogy Home Page!

We are well into Summer and warm weather! Soon it will be back to school. This site is a part of the USGenWeb and PAGenWeb projects. My name is Bill Klauk, and I am your volunteer County Coordinator and web site maintainer.

I have now been your coordinator and web site maintainer for about 8 years. Although we are continuing month to month without a specific theme, I would love to see more contributions.

Many of you may have noticed that there is now a banner across the top of every web page on this site. The parent company of Ancestry.com, who in turn owns the Rootsweb service that hosts this and many other USGenWeb sites, has added this "ad" to the top of every page that they host. Since the banner simply pushes the page down slightly on the screen (it does not write over anything), there should not be any effect on your page viewing.

Please remember, this is not MY web site - it is YOUR web site.   This site stays successful and useful through user contributions. Your generous contributions of information, data, photos, cemetery readings, out of copyright book and article transcriptions, original research and much more is always welcome. Please send any contributions to my primary contact address -- Click here --. If for any reason you can't send to my AT&T address, here is my alternate provider address --Click here--.

As is always the case, I will continue to work on old material, continue on the previously started site review and index project, and continue to post new submissions as applicable.

I have been spending a lot of time recently on creating a master index for the web site, and contributor indexes. You will begin to see some index codes on each page, as I review a page and update it. I have found that a lot of our earlier pages do not have our consistent format, do not contain a title (this is the name that appears on the information bar at the top of most web browser pages), or need updating for a no longer working email address. Each contributor is being assigned an index code, and listings are being created of every contributor's submissions. "System" pages will also have a master listing. You will note that this page has a [sys01] in the lower left corner of the page. In the past, when a contributor has changed their email address, I attempted to identify that person's contributions, then update the page, and often missed some pages (as I am now finding out). Once the master index is complete it will be quite easy to identify pages that need to be updated.

I have also activated the Contributor Hall of Fame page which right now simply lists names of contributors in alphabetical order for pages that I have already indexed. There are more names to add to the list as I have many more pages to index. If you believe that your name should be on the list, please let me know so that I can research your contribution. My apologies in advance if I have overlooked someone.

If anyone has material to contribute, please let me know, or just go ahead an send it to me as a Microsoft Word document, HTML page, email text or other "text" format as an email attachment. I can not use files submitted in Adobe PDF format. Any photos scanned should be done at 200dpi or better, and the larger the better (I can always shrink). Please save and send to me in .jpg format. Multiple file attachments may be included in each email transmission, but try to limit the total size of the attachments to 600K or under. I have been having problems with attachments in .zip format, so would prefer to receive the raw .jpg file. Please remember that if you scan material containing words and save it as a picture, you should also transcribe the words into a text document. The search engine can not find words in a picture. Please contact me by email if you are not sure about the material, or have other questions about "how to".

A brief word about my research policy. I spend a lot of time in the upkeep of this web site and I do not do personal research. I also do not have information about where to find things, such as vital records. If information has been provided to me, it has been posted. I occasionally have a pet project that might result in a web page, or in some supporting digital photography, but I can not respond to personal requests. Please direct your questions (queries) to the query system (currently using Rootsweb Message Board), and/or to the PAERIE-L mail list described below. Also see my links to the Erie Society for Genealogical Research (ESGR) and to the Erie Co (Blasco) Library - both of these organizations provide research services at reasonable rates.

My goal is to make this web site a premier location for Internet research in Erie County, Pennsylvania. I would publicly like to thank each and every individual whose name appears within these approximately 700 web pages as a contributor and/or township coordinator. Questions and/or information about the site (but not research queries) may be directed to me - Bill Klauk - at ErieCoGenie@att.net.

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!  We still need people to be listed as township coordinators - little work is involved as you only need to be a filter or point of contact for people looking for specific township information.  You do not have to live in the area to be a township coordinator, but it does help to have some knowledge of the township. New coordinators have recently been assigned for Concord, Greenfield, and Venango townships. I am currently looking for help for Elk Creek, Springfield, Wayne and Lawrence Park townships, and the City of Corry. Several other township volunteers currently have other priorities, so if you have an interest in ANY township, let me know. Send your name to Bill Klauk if you are interested.

Check back often to see what is new. Subscribe to the PAERIE-L e-mail list to keep up with what is happening.   It is hoped that those of you who are visiting this site will soon find information that is both useful and informative. Check back often and make use of the What's New feature below. And please excuse the frequent changes, but in this ever growing site, change will always be with us. Happy Genealogical Hunting!

To save space on this 'home page', I have started an archive page for old welcome letters that have material that still might be of interest, such as my "Thank you to contributors" messages, and notes about previous services that were closed down on us. If anyone is interested in reading old welcomes letters, or if you are new to visiting this site, then you may want to click on this archive link for old welcome letters.
